The Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas) is a widespread warbler across most of North America, breeding from Mexico to Alaska. There are many subspecies recognized and its song varies somewhat depending upon the location.
Yellowthroats forage for insects at low levels in weedy, scrubby and dense vegetation.
The nest is usually placed on the ground and built using grass, dead leaves and weed stalks. The female incubates 4-5 eggs for 12 days.
Common Yellowthroats are medium-sized, chunky warblers with rounded wings, blackish bills, and pink legs. Their posture, plump shape, and cocked tails can make them look like wrens. On average, the Common Yellowthroat weighs .

The adult male Common Yellowthroat is instantly recognizable with its black mask. Immature males often have a semblance of the mask.
