Zebu cattle, which originated in India, are sometimes known as a separate species, Bos indicus. However, current taxonomy recognizes zebu cattle as only a type of Bos taurus.

These were Bos taurus, the European cattle, including similar types from Africa and Asia; Bos indicus, the zebu; and the extinct Bos primigenius, the aurochs. The aurochs is ancestral to both zebu and European cattle.

During the early Holocene in course of the Neolithic Revolution, aurochs were domesticated in at least two domestication events: one concerning the Indian subspecies, leading to Zebu cattle, ...
