Absorption

Absorption: The process by which chemicals in gaseous, liquid or solid phases are incorporated into and included within another gas, liquid, or solid chemical. For example, filter media (e.g., sponges) trap unwanted molecules by absorption.

Absorption: The process in which incident radiation is retained without reflection or transmission on passing through a medium.

Absorption is based on the vast number of pores. You can imagine it as a material with too many pockets (very tiny pockets, the smaller the better), which can be filled with small things (molecules).

Nutrient Absorption
To know what nutrients to give aquatic plants it will help to understand how they absorb nutrients.

adsorption
If absorption is when a substance is soaked up by another - think of a sponge - then adsorption would be if the sponge accumulated liquid around itself to form an outer membrane. Chemical filter media removes waste by adsorbing it.
