Activated Carbon (AC) is a charcoal substance which is used in the aquarium to remove chemicals from water.
It is often supplied as a black sponge or as small black beads which are used in filters to remove certain chemicals from the water.

Activated Carbon
An Article by Andreas Iliopoulos, John G. Reclos and George J. Reclos
THIS ARTICLE APPEARED IN THE JANUARY 2002 ISSUE OF FAMA
Preface ...

Activated carbon can be purchased in many forms. My preferred form is the pelletized one because of its greater internal surface area, its ease of use and void space and its excellent wetting characteristics. G.A.C.

The use of granular activated carbon (GAC) for decolorizing marine aquarium water has had a long and successful history.

Activated Carbon
Activated carbon is the most widely known and used media for chemical filtration. Activated Carbon is used to remove organic pollutants, which cannot be handled by biological or mechanical filtration.

Activated Carbon - A filtration medium used in the aquarium filter to remove impurities from the water and help maintain clarity. It can also used to absorb fish treatments from the aquarium after the course of treatment is finished.

Activated Carbon: Carbon specially formulated for filtration. Carbon is good for removing a large number of toxins and other unwanted substances from aquarium water. It's useful for clearing or "cleaning" cloudy water.

Activated Carbon - Used in the aquarium filter to remove impurities from the water and
keep it clear. It is also used to absorb and remove medicines used in the aquarium
after the treatment is finished.

Activated Carbon: Solid carbon which is used to adsorb impurities from the water, fresh or marine. It is also useful for removing unused ozone from the air.

Activated carbon A commonly used chemical filter media.
Adipose Fin A small fin located behind the dorsal fin and in front of the caudal fin.

activated carbon
A form of carbon derived mostly from charcoal with ideal surface area and porosity for the adsorption of chemical compounds from your water, like medicines, odors or discoloration.

Activated Carbon
Available in granules (GAC) or powder. Granules are usually more practical for commercial use. Removes negative ions from the water (such as ozone, chlorine, fluorides etc.) Once used it can be recharged by heating to 900oC.

Activated carbon- many filter manufacturers state that you need this in your filter. They would say that, since you have to replace it every 4 weeks! ...

Activated Carbon is not all bad. It is very useful to remove medication from an aquarium.
Many medication will kill or harm beneficial bacteria, therefore try not to use it in your main tank
if only one fish is sick.

Activated carbon should be mentioned here too. Some brands have been reported to leach phosphates into the tank.

Activated Carbon - Carbon to work in conjunction with filtration. It is used to remove toxins from the water but is known to release Phosphate in to the aquarium once the media is exhausted.

Activated Carbon Material used in mechanical/chemical filtration systems to remove, by adsorption, dissolved matter.

ACTIVATED CARBON by Richard M. Greenfield, also by Bob Straughan
Summary: Two separate articles. Both authors are enthusiastic about the benefits of activated carbon, and emphasise that quality and correct usage are important.

Any activated carbon you are using should be replaced monthly.
2. Feeding
Make sure and find out any special feeding requirements your fish may have before purchasing them and be sure you can provide them what they need! ...

Granular activated carbon (GAC) is manufactured from carbon, typically coal, heated in the presence of steam at very high heat.

Carbon: See activated carbon.
Carbonate Hardness: The part of the total hardness that is formed by the ions of carbonates(Co3) and hydrogen carbonate(HCo3). It is symbolized by dCH.

activated carbon This is carbon, looking like crumbled charcoal. It can absorb many compounds out of the water, and is especially good at removing yellowing compounds to keep the water clear.

Bone charcoal is much denser than many present filter materials such as activated carbon and does not have as large an internal matrix to trap and hold various different compounds like tannins, phenols and liquefied dyes.

Many mechanical filters also contain activated carbon, which functions as a biological filter.

It is good news that activated carbon removes all this bad stuff, but unfortunately there are good nutrients that also are removed. Many trace elements, which are especially vital to invertebrates, are filtered out of the water by activated carbon.

Keep activated carbon in a high flow area so that the water passes through it. Once the cycle is over, you can use activated carbon intermittently or continuously if you want to
Operate the lighting starting with a 6-hour period.

Carbon: Activated carbon medium in your aquarium helps to break down dissolved substances in the water.
Carbon dioxide: Known as CO2, is the biproduct from respiration.

Polyester padding and activated carbon are universally available, and common options include zeolite for ammonia removal, resins for phosphorous removal, ceramic for biofiltration surface area, ...

Activated carbon and calcareous gravels both lead to copper loss and can either be avoided or used with the understanding that more copper will be needed.

activated carbon, zeolite, etc.) can remove (under limited circumstances) such substances as ammonia, heavy metals, dissolved organics, etc. through chemistry (e.g., ``adsorbtion'' or ``ion-exchange resins'').

But when it comes to activated carbon or other absorptive filtration media, it's best to get it in smaller quantities. Better yet are individually sealed units that aren't opened until they are used.

This problem is most often addressed through two filtration solutions: Activated carbon filters absorb nitrogen compounds and other toxins from the water, ...

They used glass filter wool as the media to cultivate bacteria, which was usually layered with charcoal (We didn't have activated carbon back then.). Most of the larger power filters are now obsolete.

HITH is often called Hexamitiasis (hexamita protozoan) There are a couple theories as to what causes HITH: Absence of a varied diet, presence of activated carbon, high nitrate levels, & poor water quality.

Makes deionized aquarium water with super activated carbon & color changing ion-exchange resin. Comes fully assembled & attaches to your faucet in seconds. System includes 4 oz.

This filter uses activated carbon and glass wool (or peat moss) to serve as biological filters. They absorb and retain the fine waste products that float in the water, along with the harmful nitrates and ammonia by-products.

Chemical filtration as the name implies can remove toxins and other chemically induced material from your aquarium system with the use of activated carbon. It's necessary to change activated carbon should be changed often to have a save community.

That's is to say, that the large particles are trapped out by the filter pads, organics are removed by, either a protein skimmer or activated carbon, and the 'chemical version' of animals waste is dealt with by the biological filter.

The use of activated carbon is also effective at removing this discoloration. An excellent method of keeping driftwood clean is to keep ancistrus or plecostomus (clown plecostomus) species which scrape and ingest it as part of their diet.

Seek advice from your local pet store for advice on medication for this disease. For long term prevention, ensure to feed your fish fresh vegetable matter and remove activated carbon filtration and any protein skimming.
