Blue Ahli are African Cichlids originating in Lake Malawi. They are also know as the Blue Hap, as they are Haplochromis Cichlids. The males turn the electric blue color. Females and juveniles are completely gray.

A common problem in African Cichlids and other pond raised fish is intestinal parasites. An obvious symptom of this problem is pinched bellies. Often the fish lose their appetite, but others may continue to eat and not put on any weight.

In our case R started when our African Cichlids become convinced they were rabbits. All of a sudden we were up to our ears in ravenous baby fish, and the brine shrimp weren't hatching well.

I ran freshwater aquariums for years, African cichlids mainly and like many people seldom had less that two tanks going at any given time.

It's color is not the most fabulous of African Cichlids, however it's pattern is beautiful. This fish will usually have a black and white striped body. The fins and sometimes the body may take on a blue color as the fish ages.

African cichlids from Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Victoria are excellent cichlid fish for starting a new aquarium. Be aware these fish are not community fish and are very aggressive.

However, larger species (like Oscars, Channel Catfish, Plecostomus, and Tinfoil Barbs), or messier species (like Oscars, Piranhas, Koi, and African Cichlids), marine fish (like Blue Damsels, Klein's Butterflies, Bangai Cardinalfish, ...

Most members of the mouth brooding variety of African Cichlids are easily bred while in the aquarium if given the proper tank set-up and excellent water conditions.

This is one of the most commonly kept African Cichlids and is THE most common Malawi Cichlid to be kept in home aquariums. It is a Rock dwelling Mbuna and is a maternal mouthbrooder.

West African cichlids come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and occupy a diversity of habitats. With South American cichlids there are some very logical breaks as to which fish are considered dwarfs and which are not.

It is well suited to be kept combined with african cichlids, and livebearers, although smaller fish are often eaten. Synodontis petricola can be kept single, although it's better to keep the fish in small groups of 3-4 animals.

This is one of the most belligerent African Cichlids. In its natural state it holds a large territory, and if you wish to house one in an aquarium with other fish, you must provide a suitably large tank.

Herbivores, such as Plecos, African Cichlids, Pacus, and Silver Dollars, are plant eaters. They do well with staple flake foods and algae wafers. They can also be supplemented with finely chopped lettuce, spinach, zucchini, or green peas.

Some fish that do much better with added salt would include Goldfish, Koi, African Cichlids, and livebearers. Indeed, the secret to keeping healthy, robust Mollys, Platys, Swordtails, and Guppys is to add salt.

Ideal tankmates include riverine Synodontis, large African tetras (such as Brycinus or Alestes spp.), African barbs such as Barbus camptacanthus, riverine African cichlids such as Pelvicachromis, and African labyrinth fishes (Ctenopoma).

If your water naturally hard and alkaline, choose fish such as African cichlids that thrive in that environment. If your water is naturally soft and acidic, consider fish such as members of the tetra family, who relish that type of water.
