Are Air Stones Necessary?
Whether or not air stones are necessary really depends on what you mean by necessary, and will vary from one system to another.
Air stones - Used with Air pumps, they increase the oxygen content of the aquarium
water by disrupting the surface to prevent a film covering which prohibits the proper
gas exchanges.

Air stones are connected to pumps to produce bubbles in an aquarium. Many think these pumps are too noisy and, therefore, choose not to use air stones.

Air stone/novelty bubbler- your fish don't need an airstone to survive but many fish seem to enjoy swimming in and out of the bubbles so it's down to personal choice.
Air stones come in many shapes and sizes and can be made of plastic, wood, glass and other materials. There are long and slender ones called walls or wands and can be used to "bubble the entire back of the aquarium.

Getting started
The first and most difficult thing to do is to attach the airline tubing to the bottle cap so that no leaks occur under pressure.
Air Stone - Whether you need an air stone is determined by how much the surface is being agitated, surprisingly, the bubbles that the air stone emits has nothing to do with how much oxygen is in the water.

Air stones and oxygen. Cray need well oxygenated water, so a spray bar would be a good addition. lots of air features go down well too, Cray tend to like sitting on an air stone, letting the bubbles flow over them.
Air stones are the small aquatic accessory that can make a big difference in the way your aquarium looks and functions. There are several uses for quality airstones in both fresh and saltwater aquariums.
·Air stones and the air pump to supply them present a "what came first the chicken or the egg?" dilemma. Sure, you'd like to maximize your air volume while minimizing bubble size; but they're mutually exclusive goals.
No air stones, just rigid tubing that goes down the back of the tank and is bent to emerge somewhere near the middle of the tank. The bigger bubbles move more water and generate more diffusion at the surface, and air stones clog up.
Its best that the air stone is used for special reasons, as it isn't particularly useful. The air pump itself provides aerotion by compressed air, which is electrically driven (well I never).

I prefer to let my mixed salt water stand over night with an air stone. The air stone causes any chlorine in the water to off gas, and by the next day the chlorine is gone.
Then I add an air stone to the cup of water, the more air the faster the CO2 is driven from the water. After 10 -15 min., I take another pH reading from the cup of water.
Whether surface tension is broken by bubbles from an air stone, a Venturi; or the water return of the filter, there must be sufficient surface agitation for the exchange to take place or there will be problems for the fish.

In each corner of the aquarium there is a clear pipe attached to the under gravel filter plate, usually with an air stone inside the tube or a powerhead on the top. As the water is being drawn up the pipe water is being drawn through the gravel bed.
Air tubing and air stones fit into these tubes and connect to an external air pump. At the top of the tubes are filter media inserts, usually carbon or resin, to provide some chemical filtration, though these must be changed frequently.
Air driven skimmers should use limewood air stones which will need to be replaced from time to time. Cheap limewood air stones have a reputation of needing to be replaced much more often than high quality stones.
The countercurrent and cocurrent skimmers use a limewood air stone in conjunction with a strong air pump to produce very fine bubbles. The larger the unit (in height) the more effective it will be.
In preparation for breeding, add a power head and air stone to the tank, unplug the heater, and begin making 20 percent daily water changes with cool rain or reverse osmosis water. The temperature should be allowed to fall to 70-72F.

If you plan to use the old filter in the new tank, leave it running on the small tank. Run an air stone in the new tank if you have one. That will help drive off any chloramines that may be in your water supply.
To remove Chlorine (bleach is chlorine) :
Simply sit the water for 24hrs. Chlorine should dissipate out of water by itself.
To speed up the process, you may use an air stone to cause water movement.
Keep oxygen levels high. All Tanganyikan tanks should have high O2 levels, but with Tropheus it's detrimental to their health. You should keep oxygen levels by with lots of surface agitation with strong filtration and power heads or air stones.
We recommend a back up in addition to your main filtration system in all tanks, such as a sponge filter, a power head, or even just a big air stone. We do not, however, recommend under gravel filters for either saltwater or freshwater.
A rather hardy fish and decent cleaner for its size (mine is about 2″.) Very entertaining with a bubble wall or leave the air stone in the open and it will chase the bubbles up most the the day, not sure why though.
