Algae Eaters are pretty self-reliant. It is important not to clean the algae in your tank if you have a Sucker Fish, as the algae are their source of food.

I had purchased eight algae eaters about 8 months ago and had at first kept them in a terrarium-type setup with salamanders and some goldfish in an unheated tank. About four months ago, they were removed to an 8 gallon aquarium, housing bumblebees.

I think that this is also partially just sales pitch, but it seems that it is also partially pipe dream as well.

Algae Eaters
The most effective control of algae in a planted aquaria is via algae eating fish.

Algae Eaters: this is how John Tullock puts it: "Many species of marine life feed on algae, and some of these should be in every tank.

The algae eaters scrape, comb, nibble, or scoop algae from the surfaces on which algae grows, while the ones that feed on detritus scoop mud methodically for "greens".

These algae eaters can live up to about 10 years, in some cases even longer. They are best kept in pairs or small schools; though you should only have 2 per 25 gallons.

CAE: Chinese Algae Eater. Gyrinocheilus aymonieri A cyprinid, which eats algae while young, but as an adult, can get very aggressive and become more omnivorous.

The fish is an algae eater although much prefers eating algae off long plant leaves and wood rather than the aquarium walls.

Feeding: They are algae eaters and can be feed vegetables and food developed for algae eaters.
Breeding: Otocinclus Catfish are best breed in large groups in slightly acidic water. They deposit their eggs on stones and plants.

It is primarily an algae eater, prefering hair algae and other soft fiberous algaes, although it will also eat prepared foods. It is an active swimmer and not at all afraid of me.

Discus My 38 Gallon Aquarium, 3 Discus, 6 Tiger Barbs, 3 Chinese Algae Eaters, one Gold Nugget Pleco, and a Gold Chinese Algae Eater. I'm using a Marineland C-Series Multi Stage Canister Filter C-220, the best fiter out there.

Because these are specialized algae eaters, the tank should contain plenty of rockwork (i.e., large stones securely stacked in the center back of the aquarium) to provide plenty of hiding places, as well as areas for algae to colonize.

SOme peaceful fish would be Algae Eaters, Angelfish, Betas, Catfish, Cories, Danios, Discus', Goldfish, Gouramis, Guppies, Knifes, Loaches, Mollies, Platies, Sharks, Swordtails, and Tetra's. As you can see their are many fish that are peaceful.

Platies, mollies, swordtails and variatus are constant algae eaters. Of the sucker mouthed fish, the otocinclus is my favorite. Small plecostomus are OK but can be destructive to plants when they get bigger.

I see you already have a Siamese algae eater -- want to consider adding a couple more? Or maybe a couple of Otos. If the algae (ye, I tend to imagine this is algae) doesn't come off from the leaves easily, cut off and throw away the affected leaves.

When first planting, aim to cover 70% of the aquarium, and add a couple of algae eating fish (Chinese algae eaters) for the first month to give the plants time to establish their root systems and use up the nutrients in the water, ...

Opinions vary regarding their algae eating habits - while some say they won't make good algae eaters at all mine have always done a very good job on that as juveniles, and still do.

You will always find that algae will grow, but by how much depends on how well you control the tank conditions. To help you control the algae, add algae eaters to your tank.

Getting rid of it
The only good fish to get rid of it is the SAE (siamese algae eater). Get a group of them and it should be gone shortly. The common plec has been known to also eat it (very rarely though).

Many people find this species to be an ideal algae eater in the backyard garden pond, as the fish can tolerate temperatures as low as 40 degrees fahrenheit.

While the various suckermouth catfish will indeed help to keep the aquarium free from many common algae types, the beginner should not make the mistake of thinking of these fish as simply algae eaters or scavengers.

Additional: Black mollies are a very good disease indicator species, Ich and oodinium are immediately visible. Black mollies are furthermore very decent algae eaters.
In the tail section some of the melano cells may develop cancerous growths.

Numerous accounts can be found of cases where a goldfish was injured, and a catfish will take a liking to sucking on the wounds. There are also a few horror stories of celestial goldfishes eyeballs being sucked out by a wandering algae eater.
