Algal bloom
An algal bloom occurs when light, temperature, water currents and water quality (especially the amount and type of nutrients in the water) combine to form perfect growing conditions for a species of algae.

Algal Bloom - An explosive growth of Algae which discolors the water and can lead to oxygen depletion.
Alkaline - Water with a pH greater than 7.

Algal Bloom: Rapid growth by algae producing large quantities of plant material which can result in low dissolved oxygen conditions as the algae dies and decays. Low dissolved oxygen can result in the death of fish and other aquatic organisms.

The fertiliser tablets that remain undissolved in the substrate in case 2 may be providing some other nutrient that sets off the algal bloom and not necessarily P.

A woman had both a permanent casualties problem and aggressive algal blooms, although she was performing partial water changes weekly. She was using water from an underground rainwater reservoir.

Areas where this detritus builds up also become prime breeding grounds for algal blooms.

Don't put your daphnia in a container of dense algae (and don't change too much water from the tank for algae water at one time) because algal blooms tend to raise pH to very high levels (over pH 9), and coupled with even a low ammonia concentration, ...

Filtering with micron cartridges or diatom filters will successfully remove these algal blooms. Greenwater is a great source of nutrients (food) for species such as brine shrimp, Daphnia spp.

Sometimes a bloom looks green, because phagocytic (=capable of ingesting particles) bacteria are devouring an algal bloom, ...

Moreover, light quality underwater can change rapidly depending on water depth, turbidity, algal blooms and the level and type of organic solutes present.

Surpluses often occur due to large amounts of uneaten fish food and this often creates algal blooms. The best remedy to this is simply to do regular water changes.
