The Alligator gar is the largest of the Garpikes, growing up to 10 feet long and weighing over 300 pounds. Obviously, this fish is not a recommended aquarium fish and is best suited to a public aquarium.
Alligator gar, Atractosteus spatula The alligator gar has a short broad snout and two big rows of teeth in the upper jaw. This species is spotted on the posterior part of the body and to a lesser extent on other parts of the body.
No Gar gets bigger than this one with it reaching a possible weight of up to 300 lbs. If you happen to see a pet store selling what they say is an Alligator Gar they are most likely confusing it with the shorter species "Shortnose Gar".
