I started with 2 amazon swords. As the plants grew and rooted I took them out of the water and carefully cut them vertically in half. If you do this properly you should have two new amazon swords with some leaves and some roots each.

Amazon Swordplant - Echinodorus bleheri - another large but very hardy plant, the Amazon Sword makes a great centerpiece for larger aquariums, but can be kept in smaller tanks with moderate lighting for quite some time.
Amazon Swords (Echinodorus sp.): I have had really great success with Amazon Swords in the natives tank (as Aquatics Unlimited on Hwy. 100 can attest).
Amazon sword plants (Echinodorus species) have been available in the aquarium hobby for many years, as they are a fairly easy plant to keep as long as they are provided with sufficient light and nutrients.

An amazon sword is part of almost every aquarium. It enhances water quality and produces anti toxins that combat diseases. This tank has some 5 week old marble angels.
The Amazon Sword Plant is a very popular plant with many hobbyists. It has numerous long pointed leaves that grow on short stems. The plants color will display several shades of light and dark greens.
Amazon Sword Plants (Echinodorus) are in a genus that embraces more than fifty relatively hardy and adaptable species, most of which are native to the flood plains of South America.
Also I've found that a great plant they prefer over the amazon swords is a good section of cabomba plants. I had a small patch in my tank until recently and they all fought for this spot every breeding cycle.
bleheri, paniculatus, amazonicus: Your generic amazon swords, usually available in small, medium or large. Light green leaves can be over 20" (50cm). Produces plantlets directly on the flower stalk.
cordifolius (radican sword): heart-shaped leaves.
Amazon sword (Echinodorus Amazonicus): These have large, tough leaves and can generally hold their own against most goldfish. You can get smaller dwarf swords, these are also good as they still have the same tough leaves.
If one has plants such as Amazon Swords or Cryptocoryne, and these develop sorry-looking leaves with lots of algal spots on them, the tendency of many aquarists is to prune the affected leaves and remove them.
Echinodorus grandiflorus (family Alismataceae) is of the biggest of the Amazon sword plant species with a single leaf reaching over a metre in length if the plant is doing well.

The male prefers building his large-bubbled nest under the leaf of an Amazon swordplant which reaches the surface. The pair embrace directly under the bubblenest, with the female grasping sometimes 20 or more eggs between her fins and body.
Red belly Piranhas can get frightened easily and appreciate sheltered areas in the aquarium, provided by large plants such as the Amazon Sword, and pieces of bogwood. To see the piranha at its best, allow natural sunlight to fall on the tank.
Floating plants like duckweed, and large amazon swordplants. Surprisingly, java fern can also be an excellent fast-grower when supplied with high CO2 and high light levels.

Crypts or amazon swords are good choices, and not too demanding.

The aquarium should contain a number of large plants such as Amazon Sword plants as well as floating plants to dim the light. The aquarium should also contain roots and rocks that create hiding places for the fish.

Sometimes broad-leafed plants like Amazon swords will be scraped a little too closely by the plecos, so they bear watching.Their diet can be supplemented by blanched zucchini and bottom feeder tablets.
Most of the plants (Java moss, java fern, amazon swords) have been there for months. I just added anubias nana, dwarf lily (not really shown in the picture) and also cork screws recently. I hope you like them.
eating habits - while some say they won't make good algae eaters at all mine have always done a very good job on that as juveniles, and still do. Certain plants may become food either, so should you wonder what happened to your gorgeous amazon sword ...
Mouthbrooders will dig out the gravel and the female will deposit eggs in the depression. The eggs are fertilized and then taken in the mouth until they hatch. Angelfish will deposit eggs against plants, such as amazon swords.
