Ammonia poisoning is one of the biggest killers of aquarium fish. It occurs most often when a tank is newly set up.

Ammonia poisoning is a very real threat to your fish, especially when the tank is new and is still cycling or if the tank has been stressed and the biological filter has been upset or removed.

Ammonia Poisoning
Symptoms: Fish appears to have red and inflamed gills and will be at the water surface “gasping' for air. Very common is new or heavily populated tanks.

(Ammonia Poisoning)
Symptoms: Red or bleeding gills. Fish may appear darker in color and may gasp for air at the surface.

Solution to Ammonia Poisoning disease in aquarium water
The disease could be cure by a breakdown (oxidation of the ammonia by Bacteria in the aquarium itself or more effectively by a biological (undergravel) filter through the process called ...

Were the fish laboriously breathing at the surface and gulping air (ammonia poisoning)? Were the fish hanging near the surface at weird angles and sucking the surface water (nitrite)?

Weaker fish may succumb to ammonia poisoning; a partial water change will dilute ammonia and reduce stress.
Day 8
First stage bacteria are well established and are processing ammonia as fast as the fish are producing it.

A matured biological filter will ensure that your new acquisitions are not exposed to ammonia poisoning and other toxins. A sponge filter powered by an airpump, or outside filter with a biowheel can work well for this purpose.

Oxygen Deprivation, CO2 Poisoning, Ammonia Poisoning
Ammonia and carbon dioxide suffocating fish in container.
White water lines. Plants die, fish have frayed fins.

The fish produce ammonia faster than the bacteria colony can grow to handle, and the fish die of ammonia poisoning.

They prefer moderately hard water but can live in very soft to very hard water. Ammonia poisoning is especially harmful to goldfish, the first signs being blood streaks in their fins. I kept my goldfish in a pH of 7.5 in soft water with no problems.

Ammonia poisoning - like swimming in a pool of pee
Nitrite poisoning - breathing in an alien atmosphere
Copper poisoning - nobody survives a diet of metals
Toxic fumes - they dissolve in the water ...

If your fish lines itself up with a rock, then swims at it real fast and scrapes on it, it is itching for some reason. This is not normal if done excessively. Possible causes are ammonia poisoning, a pH swing, or a parasite of some sort.

Don't rely on this stuff, except in extreme situations like ammonia poisoning because it can cause excessive algal growth. To lower pH long-term, filter over peat, or use distilled or deionized water mixed with your tapwater. Freshwater Ich ...
