Anabantidae family - Labyrinth fish
Anabantoids family is part of the Anabantoidaea class. This class is divided into Anabas, Ctenopoma, Malpulutta and Sendelia genus.
One of the smaller species of anabantids, they are often mistaken for cichlids. In the tank you should provide a weedy existence much like their habitat in the streams, ponds and rivers of Africa.

One of the most beautiful of all freshwater tropical fish, male bettas need to be kept as singles due to aggression.
Anabantids require very clean water. The male builds a bubblenest by blowing bubbles that remain at the surface. The pair breeds by wrapping and intertwining. The eggs of Gouramis tend to float, while betta eggs will sink.

The Anabantid Family. This is the family of the famous and popular Siamese Fighting Fish. Since the males will fight to the death, it is critical that you only have one male per tank.
The only Anabantid I caught repeatedly was Ctenopoma kingsleyae (a nice, brown, wiener-looking fish.) Of course, you run into a lot of Aphyosemion sp. and Epiplatys sp.
Breeding Anabantids can be quite rewarding. Some species build nests out of bubbles into which they place their eggs while others, like some Cichlids, are mouthbrooders.

Bettas, like other Anabantids, are bubblenest builders. The water must be no more than 6" deep and there must be no surface water movement. The pair do a courtship dance and the female lays her eggs in the nest. The fry hatch after 24 hours.

I use it on my experiments in breeding Anabantids as a floating anchor for nests and it never stops appearing and growing everywhere in all my 15 tanks. Sometimes its behaviour resembles more like a weed than anything else.
Gouramis are anabantids also, and as a related species are more likely to trigger the betta's territorial instinct. I once placed a betta and a dwarf gourami together. Never again.
