It was briefly placed in the genus Hemichromis (Jewel Cichlids) before the scientific name Anomalochromis thomasi became valid in 1989. Anomlaochromis is a monotypic genus - meaning thomasi is the only member.

Anomalochromis thomasi is another spunky African. A bit of attitude, nice gem-like coloration but not as easy to find as they once were. They come in several forms as well, none too different from the other so I wouldn't get particular.

It has been suggested that Anomalochromis thomasi, a west African cichlid is a good candidate to eradicate snails. This rather peaceful cichlid will only grow to 10 cm and have a characteristic coloration. They can be easily added in a community tank.

It should not be confused with Anomalochromis thomasi, the African Butterfly Cichlid. It is a social fish that will form pairs, which remain "faithful" to each other.
