Most members of this group do spend the majority of the daylight hours hiding among the aquarium decor, occasionally slinking from one crevice to another. Therefore, it is very important to provide them with plenty of suitable shelter sites.

Now that the water current is right, our thoughts turn to aquarium decoration. Chaetostoma will live on wood if nothing else is available, but they do prefer smooth stone. I have experimented with a bare tank containing Chaetostoma spp.

Floating plants can also be tied to aquarium decorations and driftwood to create additional interest in the middle or foreground of the tank.

Aquarium decorations will need to be removed monthly for maintenance. Not allowing good access for maintenance will result in a much higher cost to service the aquarium.

Rocks, plants, and other aquarium decorations will work well to keep this species healthy. Do not house with much larger fish. Similar sized fish are appropriate. They may be housed in groups as long as each individual has enough room.

Some interesting facts about wood: most of us simply refer to any piece of wood meant for aquarium decoration as simply driftwood or bogwood, but what does it really mean and what are we really buying?
