Auratus is one of the more popular Africans, which is not necessarily a good thing since department stores routinely stock this pretty little devil along side community tank fish like Angels and Gouramis.

Auratus should be part of a large tank of 75 gallons or more that has caves, hiding areas and other species of mbuna. Live plants will be destroyed.

Auratus cichlids are small, elongate fish that can grow up to 11 cm. Juveniles and females are bright yellow with black and white stripes on the upper half of the body.

Melanochromis auratus are a fantastic aquarium species. When young, males and females are both a bright golden yellow with two brown to black horizontal bands along the top half of their bodies.

Males develop breeding tubercles on their gill covers and on the leading ray of their pectoral fins. Females may have rounder convex vents while males have thinner concave vents.

Black Oranda Goldfish are most easily recognized by their dark color and interesting head growth, which is called a "wen". It is interesting to note that Black Orandas are born without a wen.

The Oranda is one of several varieties of what is commonly known as the Goldfish, Carassius auratus auratus. The Goldfish originally came from parts of Asia, China, and Japan, but now enjoys worldwide distribution due to controlled breeding programs.

PD: Young individuals have females coloring which consists of a golden-yellow base color with three black bands.

Auratus are good parents. They are mouth brooders that keep their babies in their mouths for about 1 month, after that the babies are released and the parents continue to take care of them.

Auratus was one of the first cichlids to be exported from Lake Malawi. The males will only defend a territory when females are present, but will leave it as soon as no females appear interested.

auratus hold the same sway, but I don't have the tank or the time to keep them right now. As for opportunity, I have two species that I keep just because of happenstance.

Colouration in juveniles is identical, and similar to M. auratus, but males become much darker in colour (see photo).

i have a 30 gallon tank with 1 jewel 1 ahli and 1 auratus. is it possible to add a pair of convicts to this tank without them killing each other??? i really want to breed cichlids plz help
