HAB: Shallow areas of lakes, springs, streams, and flooded areas, usually in slow-moving water. Central America; Southern Mexico, Honduras. The Firemouth has been found in underground water systems.
The fish is Cichlasoma aureum - a smallish Central American cichlid, closely related to C. meeki (firemouths). C.

meeki, I suggest looking into purchasing some Thorichthys aureus, or the Aureum or Blue Flash cichlid. They are beautiful beyond description, and if you enjoy the antics and colors of T. meeki, you will surely fall in love with T. aureus.
Typical pastime: a male attacking his reflection in the fishbowl glass. This B. splendens shares his 2.5-gallon habitat with an Epipremnum aureum that affords him resting and hiding places.
