Bedotia geayi is a native of Madagascar where it inhabits fast-flowing mountain waters. While not as elaborately colored as many of the rainbows from Australia and New Guinea, it maintains a pleasing contrast of red, black, and gold.
Bedotia geayi have much longer, slimmer bodies than the Melanotaenia rainbows. Adult males have brightly orange/red coloured fins and commonly reach 15 cm when adult, females are darker colours and stay smaller at around 10 cm.

An egg layer, Bedotia geayi spawns over fine-leaved plants. During courtship, the male will show his brightest colors. At a temperature of 75°F, the fry will hatch after six or seven days.
Bedotia geayi SYN : None PD : An elongated, laterally compressed species with a pointed head and a rounded, fan-like caudal fin. There bare two dorsal fins; the first very short, while the second is much longer.
