Bedotia geayi is a native of Madagascar where it inhabits fast-flowing mountain waters. While not as elaborately
colored as many of the rainbows from Australia and New Guinea, it maintains a pleasing contrast of red, black,
and gold.

Bedotia geayi have much longer, slimmer bodies than the Melanotaenia rainbows. Adult males have brightly orange/red coloured fins and commonly reach 15 cm when adult, females are darker colours and stay smaller at around 10 cm.
