Bichirs

Aquarium BGABicuspid

Polypterids (Bichirs and Ropefish)
The Polypteridae are primitive, snake-like fish from Africa. They are predatory and essentially carnivorous, but largely opportunistic feeders.

Bichirs are primitive ray-finned fishes collected from Africa. They are opportunistic feeders and should be housed with large, peaceful fish.

Bichirs are popular subjects of public and large hobby aquaria. Though predatory, they are otherwise peaceful and relatively nonactive, preferring to lay on the bottom, and make good tankmates with other species that are large enough not to be prey.

Bichirs do not have swim bladders but they do have air breathing organ which acts similarly to lungs allowing them to breathe air on the surface. This allows them to live even in water where oxygen is rather low.

Bichirs are carnivorous and should be fed accordingly. Many specimens will accept nothing less than live foods such as earthworms or fish. Prepared foods such as chopped beef heart and fresh beef may also be accepted.

Tiger bichirs can get large and will need room for them to turn around and swim. This fish will need a place to hide. Do not keep tiger bichirs in with small fish because they will eat them.

Hey, I just bought two bichirs, and I have them in a 55 gallon tank with my two dragon fish(violet goby). they all are not above six inches. And they seem to get along fine.

Also called the Senegal Bichir, this is a very hardy species of Bichirs or Polypterus. They max out at around 30 cm long and never have any colouring to impress. However, they have a great personality and make a great addition to the larger aquarium.

This is a schooling fish so they will be less aggressive if kept in a school of 5 or more, but because of their high price this is may not be practical for the average hobbyist. Some tank mates could include other large species of Characins, Bichirs, ...

In this regard the parameters taken into account are (among others): tank size and aquascaping (which should also address their need to breath atmospheric air), water requirements (as a matter of fact Bichirs are among the less fussy fishes I've ...
