Bio-filter

Aquarium BiofilmBiogeography

Bio-filter - Biological Filter. Any device or Substrate which provides an attachment site for the nitrifying bacterial colony in an aquarium. See Nitrogen Cycle.

The bio-filter for your tank is only ``fed'' by the wastes of the fish you have in the tank.

Even after the bio-filter is established, make changes slowly. Don't wait 12 weeks with 2 fish in your tank then go out and buy 15 more -- your bio-filter won't be able to handle the sudden increase in fish waste. Give it time to grow.

A Bio-Filtered Aquarium with Black Water essence added to the water will do them more Good then harm. Works pretty much like the plant supplement.

The water flows through this channel into a drain located in the back of the aquarium and down into the sump or bio-filter which sits below the tank under the stand.

Bio-Filtration - while their primary function is to produce healthy water conditions for fish, bio-filters also reduce waste buildup both mechanically and biologically.

Install all support equipment, heaters, filters (inoculate bio-filter media with Cycle), lighting. Condition the new water with Aqua Plus and perform basic water testing, then adjust pH, KH, and GH to levels required for aquarium inhabitants.

Use aquarium water:- When you want to clean the filter outer box, foam, impeller etc, you can use aquarium water, to safeguard your bio-filter. If you use unconditioned tap water, every helpful bacteria in your filtercan be destroyed.

Well, you never know... The point of this is, that the "break in cycle" takes some time to get going. A new tank isn't ready for a full load of fish because the Bio-Filter hasn't built up yet. Go slowly. Good things come to those who wait.

My first pond
In the spring of 2000 I built my first pond, the one on the left in the above photo. It holds 2000 gallons of water and measures 9 feet by 12 feet, and is three feet deep. I made my own bio-filter using a five gallon bucket.

The pH level is around 7.2 and I don't have a bio-filter, just a poor sponge filter with 200w heater and air pump.
They never spawn but at least they are still alive, that's what I call life instinct... :) ...

This is especially problematic, since it will spike your ammonia to levels your bio-filter can't handle. It can also cultivate the growth of fungus in your tank, which scaleless fish like puffers are especially susceptible to.
