Black Water Extract - Home-made or commercially prepared water conditioner to create the dark, very soft and acidic water typical of Amazon Basin rivers. The chemistry and dark color is due to decaying vegetation causing high humic acid levels.

[edit] What is Black Water?
Blackwater refers to water in rivers which is coloured dark brown or black and runs through forests. The colouration is caused by the tannins leached from the wood and leaves in the bottom of the rivers.
The nijsseni-complex is comprised of highly endemic (very restricted ranges) black water species. Nearly every black water drainage in the Peruvian Amazon might have its own species.

Some people like this because it gives them a "black water effect". The leaching can continue for months or years after you introduce the piece to your tank.
The most extreme water conditions are found in the Black Water areas. These tea colored waters are clear but deeply stained. This darkening is caused by the massive decay of vegetation that is carried out in the streams.
The black water refers to the water being stained by humic acid from decaying plants and leaves. If you have ever seen an aquarium with slightly tea colored water then you have a mental picture.
Really a clear, light yellowish-brown, "black water" refers to conditions in rivers like the Amazon which flow through rich vegetation (e.g. a rainforest).
Commercially available black water additives can help simulate the Silver Arowana's natural habitat, although they can adapt to most water supplies and thrive.
Tannin can be added to the water by mean of commercial "Black Water" or you can use dry Oak Leaf. In Thailand, we use the dry Indian Oak Leaf (Terminalia catappa), if not available dry banana leaf will also do the trick.
