Blue Ram Spawn Diary: Day 3
Well, bad news. I came home from work tonight and all the babies are gone. I'm guessing the female must have eaten them, because they are nowhere to be seen. I was afraid something like this would happen.

Blue Rams, Microgeophagus ramirezi, are often difficult to sex. I find the best method is to examine the dark spot on the side of the fish. On males (top fish) the spot is solid black.

Blue Rams can be semi-difficult to care for. They are sensitive to chemicals, temperatures and pH levels. Water temperatures should be kept between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit and pH levels should be slightly acidic, from 6.4 to 7.2.

German Blue Ram

My male ram with long fins. He's a daddy two times over.

A pair of blue rams (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi), male in front, female behind. Many cichlids form strong pair bonds while breeding.
A discus (Symphysodon spp.) is guarding its eggs. Advanced broodcare is one of the defining characteristics of cichlids.

The German Blue Ram is prized for its winning personality despite its fierce appearance. With its spiked dorsal fin, low-slung pectoral fins, and mottled deep blue splotches of color, Papilochromis ramirezi appears to be an aquarium bulldog.

The "German Blue Ram" has become one of the more popular dwarf cichlids found at your local fish stores today.

nijjseni + about 50 blue rams fry in 2/3-full 5g tank with RO water and no regular water changes. Sometimes I syphon off building crap from the bottom and fill in more RO water. Sofar, no promblems.

(although this was not originally the species name given, and has been confused with the German Blue Ram before the Bolivian ram was introduced to the hobby, specific articles on the web has proved difficult.

The fish include: 10 harlequin rasboras, 2 SAE's, 5 otocinclus, 6 corydoras, 4 german blue rams, a few killi fish, and 6 cardina japonica shrimp. I don't gravel vac too often.

The blue ram has the coloration of a wild fish. A golden tank-raised strain is also common. It has a yellow color overall, with red in the fins and on the forehead. Long-finned strains are also available -- often marketed as butterfly rams.

The Tiger Barbs would kill off the shrimp, and puffers are best kept in brackish water setups if not full marine conditions. I would say you can add 2 German Blue Ram Cichlids or 2 Bolivian Ram Cichlids, they should do ok with the barbs.
