Bowfins are unusual specimens that make for unique additions to the aquarium or pond by Mike McEwan ...
Gar and bowfin have a vascularised swim bladder that is used in the same way. Loaches, trahiras, and many catfish breathe by passing air through the gut. Mudskippers breathe by absorbing oxygen across the skin (similar to what frogs do).
There is a 16-page color section containing photographs of 118 of the most colorful species. Chapter 8 discusses the gars and Chapter 9 the bowfins.
