The corner/box/bubble filter is run by an air pump which pushes forced air through a tube into the filter box. This creates a vacuum which causes a reaction by the water below the vacuum line to rush into the displaced space.

The less time the fish spend in the temporary plastic container the better. Certainly don't keep them in there for longer than 6 hours, or you may need to add a temporary bubble filter or change out some of the water to prevent fouling.
