My butterfly fish is way cool. It's in with discus and an angel fish, also a biker eel and some other nice fish. What a lovely fish it is, the high light of my tank. Mean while it has grown well in my pH of 7.2 or so. Good friends with my kribs.
The Butterfly Fish, also known as the African Butterfly Fish, is generally a good community fish. They can be a bit intolerant of other surface swimming fish however, and have been known to nip fins. They are a predator and will eat small fish.
Most Butterfly Fish are not fussy eaters. Some preferred live foods are; small fish, tubifex worms, glass worms, bloodworms, brine shrimp, crickets and daddy long leg spiders.

Like some of the butterfly fish, some large angelfish will eat these smaller anemones, much to the delight of reef keepers.

I have three African butterfly fish in my 46 bow front. It is heavily planted with a fair amount of water sprite that has floated to the top from my two other plants.
For example, the Copperbanded Butterfly fish is a common predator of Aiptasia (although there seems to be quite a variance from individual to individual in terms of their appetite for these anemones).
I did experiment with some species of angelfish and butterfly fish that I read that might not harm corals but it never worked. They did attack corals and I always had to remove them from the tank.
To prevent Aiptasia fish like Copper Banded Butterfly Fish, and inverts like the Peppermint Shrimp are good at keeping them under control.

Choosing saltwater fish may also lead you into Butterfly fish. Although some of these tend to be tender, the Lemon, Pyramid, Reef, and Long Nosed tend to be hardy.
If you sell sensitive marine species such as sharks, stingrays, certain species of butterfly fish, ribbon eels, or dragonets (and the list goes on) to the wrong aquarium, be prepared to eat your profit when the customer walks in with a dead fish.
Compatibility:
Acceptable tank mates to try are rosy Tetra, black banded Leporinus, severum, butterfly fish and rasbora. Pacus will eat small fish that they can catch, but Zebra Danios swim fast and can often avoid being eaten.
