Butterflyfish have very small mouths and their teeth are flexible! As they age a long, trailing filament will begin to grow from their dorsal fin that can grow up to 8 inches long.

The Butterflyfish is a carnivorous surface-dwelling fish. The mouth is wide and up-turned, and the pectoral fins are large and wing-like. Body coloring is a marbled brown and beige.

These are best left to experienced aquarists (and even then, only a few species are hardy enough to survive in captivity) due to their general dislike of prepared foods and susceptibility to disease.

Obviously, many Butterflyfish do not live well in aquariums unless fed live corals and kept in large schools, feats best left to large public aquariums. There are however, many species that do not appear on our list.
