Buttikoferi

Aquarium ButterflyfishCabomba aquatica

The Buttikoferi is among the most belligerent of African Cichlids
by Mike McEwan
Tilapia buttikoferi is a large and popular Cichlid. It comes from West Africa and is one of the largest of all African Cichlids.

Buttikoferis are extremely intelligent and aggressive aquarium fish. Many owners of these fish love them because they are very active and react to movements outside of the aquarium. It would not be advised to put another fish in a tank with a tilapia.

I have had a buttikoferi for about a year now. He has grown nearly 15 cm and is about 30 cm long now. Before I put him in a 170 liter tank by himself, I was breeding Pseudotropheus zebra's and about 8 of them escaped into the undergravel filtration.

Green terrors are mean, but I've had success keeping them with the even more belligerent Tilipia buttikoferi From: Kevin

I currently have 2-Green Terrors in my 100 gallon tank full of aggressive cichlids.

Zebra tilapia (Tilapia buttikoferi) and a fish I didn't recognise. (A reader has since suggested that it is a Lake Malawi Haplochromine, perhaps Protomelas fenestratus ?).
Catfish..... rainbowfish
Lots more parrot fish..... black angelfish ...

A huge (over 45 cm) Tilapia buttikoferi in the same tank trully dominated it in terms of size. Unfortunaly a large Cichlasoma citrinellum dominated it in real terms.
