Canister filters are very efficient filters if used and maintained correctly.
Canister Filter
If you take an internal filter, increase its filter media compartment, make it watertight and connect it to your tank using two water tubes(water in+water out), you have a canister filter.
Canister filters have been in the hobby for a long time now, more than the lifetime of many of our current hobbyists. They most commonly are not directly attached to the tank, but connected by flexible hoses.
Canister filter/aquarium size recommendations are often given in a range. The low end of the range indicates the maximum aquarium size effectively filtered when the aquarium contains large or high numbers of saltwater or freshwater fish.

Canister Filters are mostly for larger tanks, and probably not necessary for the beginner. They sit outside of the tank, usually housed in the cabinet of the tank's stand, and draw water out through a hose, returning it by another hose.
Canister filters, while being harder to clean, provide the advantages of allowing tanks to be closer to the wall, and selecting water inlet and return location and direction.

The External Power Filter is very common and inexpensive. It draws water from the tank and passes it through filter material such as sponges, carbon and zeolite.
External canister filters are used for all tanks. I chose to have only one filter type since this makes it easier to keep a stock of spare parts for them. Spare handles, joints and many meters of pipes are in stock.
A: I like canister filters because they are so thorough in passing the water through the chemical medium, but many types of aquariums may not need this effective of a filter.

Same principal as the internal except the canister is sited below the aquarium and water is fed into and the filtered water exits via soft pipework.
If you have a canister filter, you may be able to inject the gas directly into the inlet and allow the impeller to break up the CO2, allowing it to dissolve in the filter chamber.

There are several types of filters available on the market, including under gravel filters, canister filters, hang-on-tank filters, and wet dry filters.
A moderate current provided by a power filter or canister filter is appreciated. The water should be slightly alkaline (pH about 7.6) within a temperature range of 24° to 29°C.
