A carapace covers the body, including the 4 to 6 pairs of thoracic appendages, and is used as a brood chamber. The abdomen and post-abdomen (distal to the anus) is generally bent forward under the thorax.

Health check: Fish: both maroon clowns healthy & spawning, orchid dottyback looks good too; Custaceans: the blood shrimp molts about once every 6 weeks and seems healthy; the old emerald crab is huge (carapace 1.5 inch) and the new one eats hair ...

On the back carapace there is a tan stripe that runs from the head down to its tail. On the shrimps side flanks are a series of broken lateral line that are a reddish-brown in color. The tail may also contain two or more black dots.

The crustaceans' bodies are protected by an articulated carapace. The animal abandons its carapace when it becomes too small due to body growth; this phenomenon is called the molt.

I've learned that the pectoral scutes and carapace (upper "shell") shape are two of the main elements (beyond place of discovery) to detect what kind of geographic variant is under investigation. I'm NOT that clever.

If raised indoors, aeration should be adjusted to produce large bubbles. Small bubbles in the daphnia culture will cause the bubbles to become lodged in the carapace of the culture, and they will die.
