Cataracts General Description A cataract is a lens that has become opaque and does not transmit light efficiently. While not common, this condition does occur in fish. Causes include nutritional deficiency, trauma and hereditary factors.
(Cataracts) Symptoms:: White or gray material covering the eyes`only. Treatment: In the process, special attention should be made to assure that ammonia and nitrite levels stay within accepted measures.
Disease: Fungus or Cotton Wool (called Cataracts on the eyes) Symptoms: White or gray fuzz resembling cotton or wool. What it is: Fungal infection, usually appearing on injuries to fins or scrapes. Can also appear on the eyes and mouth.
Along its 2800 miles, the Zaire River moves through many environments including over 200 miles of rapids and cataracts. This rapid region is the inspiration for this biotope aquarium, although similar environments exist in other African rivers.
For example, experiments have shown that tryptophan-deficient fish become scoliotic, showing curvature of the spine, and methionine deficiency produces lens cataracts.
You may find that your betta frequently lunges for food and misses or doesn't recognize movement outside the tank like he used to. Some bettas develop what can only be characterized as cataracts.
