Report
By thaichimes on ...

Catfish are generally recognized by the barbels on each side of the mouth. These mimic the whiskers of a cat, and thus the name "catfish." Considered naked or without scales, catfish have either thick, leathery skin or "dermal" armor.

This catfish needs a light colored, sandy substrate. Subdue light levels by adding floating plants, and no sharp rocks should be in the aquarium. Healthy specimens display a coppery sheen.

Glass Catfish Species Profile
The glass catfish is one of the most unusual fish commonly kept in the hobby, and it is certainly the most transparent.

Glass catfish are very sensitive to a high change in pH, and are hard to feed unless they are kept is shoals of at least six. It is impossible to tell a male from a female, but it is quite easy to tell K. minor from K.

As a digger, the Synodontis Angelicus Catfish will appreciate a fine sandy bottom with large roots and crevices for hiding places in a tank of 50 gallons or more. Sensitive to nitrates, a good water conditioner is helpful.

Known as the "Electric Catfish", this fish uses its shock to capture food fish. The electric organ, capable of discharging 300-400 V, is derived from pectoral muscle and surrounds almost the entire body. It is used both for prey capture and defense.

Twig Catfish

Origin: Brazil, La plata region, and tributaries to the Amazon river.

Catfish or no catfish, I recommend doing 10-15% water changes once a week for the life of your aquarium. Once you get into this habit, it is not really that much work.

Catfish
Bandit Cory
Comes from the rivers of Colombia, South America and has similar care requirements as other corydoras species.

Glass Catfish
These unique fish are schooling fish that need at least three of their own species in a school. These catfish are shy and unsure, especially prone to disease if stressed so good water quality is required for optimal health.

Glass Catfish
Another catfish to avoid is the Glass Catfish - Kryptopterus bicirrhis. While it stays small enough to be an aquarium fish (up to 6"), it is very delicate and should not be purchased by beginners.

Green Catfish - Corydoras aeneus - These classic scavengers are also very tolerant of varying water conditions and temperatures. Also available in albino form.

Feeder Catfish
Feeder Catfish
Feeder Catfish is a better feeder than goldfish for several reasons. They are a very hardy fish that is capable of living in less ideal water conditions which would have killed many other fish.

Channel catfish viral disease
Disease affecting primarily channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), but other species of catfish have been infected experimentally. Confined to USA and Honduras.

Catfish & Bottom Feeders - Includes loaches and cories.
Characins - Commonly known as tetras. Includes pencilfish.

Catfish family rich of species from South and central America with characteristic strong skin armoring and typical form.

Catfish are not scavengers, to be put in an aquarium to clean up messes. You may have heard that if you keep Catfish and/or a Plecostomus or two, you'll hardly ever need to clean your tank. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This catfish gets its common name from its color and large mouth. The body will have a rusty red or brown base color. The body will also be long and flat. The head of this fish looks like a pancake, very flat and thin.

This tiny catfish comes from warm waters in South America and is mainly a bottom dweller. Since they are so small, they are quite shy and shouldn't be kept with aggressive tank mates. Live bearers, other smaller corydoras, or tetras are ideal.

The glass catfish, Kryptopterus bicirrhis, is an elegant fish in its natural state and should be kept that way. Their muscle tissue and skin is transparent, so that you can clearly see their bones and organs.

Red Tailed Catfish diet in the wild consists of fish, large crustaceans and, surprisingly, fruit. Very small juveniles should be fed twice a day and it is a good idea not to let them get used to live food at an early age.

Otocinclus catfish (otocinclus affinis)
Maintenance
Surprisingly little is required. My daily routine is just feeding the fish and adding fertilizers. Once a week or so I trim the plants.

Species:
Catfish and loaches are the most common aquarium bottom feeder fish. There are 37 known families of the catfish. But their compatibility with other fish need to be judged.

A perfect example of this is the rotting driftwood diet of certain _Panaque_ and other _Loricariid_ catfishes.

Unrelated to the Bala Shark or to true sharks, the Iridescent Shark - Pangasius sutchi is a catfish. It grows to over 3' and tends to injure its nose against the aquarium glass.

The family Loricariidae contains the venerable and hardy "plecostomus" catfish. These primitive fishes have been prized by aquarists for decades due to their insatiable appetite for algae and uneaten food.

Hi, I have a 72gal bofront tank with 5 aferican cichlids, a catfish and a sukker. We noticed a month or so ago that we had babies!! I read a lot on this site and decided to let nature do its thing and leave them in there.

One only needs to look in shops or public aquariums to see how many pacu, Red Tailed Catfish, Giant Gouramis, triggerfish, eels, and yes, even sharks have been donated because they have outgrown their original owners' aquaria.

The crabro lives in large caves together with a large, bagrid catfish, the Kampango. The crabro can change its color very rapidly from Black to the attractive gold barred "bumble bee" look. It does that, because while barred, the catfish tolerates Ps.

Some, such as the endearing Corydoras catfish, seem to have a “live-and-let-live' outlook on life, getting along just fine with most other peaceful tankmates, while others seem to be perpetually scrapping for a fight.

Shane's World - Planet Catfish Collecting in: Uruguay
This is a great site with a lot of information about collecting various catfish in their native habitats. Since this site specializes in catfish, the most detailed info is about these fishes.

In some species, particularly the Characins and the catfish, there is a small extra fin between the dorsal and the caudal fins, known as the adipose fin. although this is not really used.

The Plecostomus is one of the fastest growing catfishes in captivity. A "cute" three-inch Pleco can double in length in six months and grow to a "horrendous" adult size of close to two feet in a couple of years.
