Caudal Penduncle: The long, narrow section which leads into the caudal fin (tail). Chemical Filtration: The process of filtering the water through a chemical substrate, most often activated carbon.
Caudal Penduncle : The part of the body which attaches the caudal (tailfin) to the body. The surgeonfish's spines are located on the caudal penduncle.
nijsseni do have a spot (round) on the caudal penduncle, it seems to be more visible on younger specimens though > Female........nijsseni...lateral spot is large and splotch-like and has > a cheek splotch as well.
Naso tangs are distinguished by the two fixed spines on the caudal penduncle. In other tangs and surgeonfish, the spines retract into a sheath. Some Naso tangs develop nasal protrusions as they mature.
The top and bottom of the tail fin is generally red, as are the pelvic and anal fins. The dorsal fin also has a hint of red. Their most distinguishing characteristic is on the caudal penduncle which has a bold black 'cross' shape.
