Channel Catfish - Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque, 1818)
Channel catfish are a multi-faceted fish if ever there was one.
Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) also get quite large and require very large quarters (like the Mississippi River).
Channel catfish and tilapia are examples of warmwater species. Their temperature range for growth is between 75-90ºF. A temperature of 85ºF for catfish and 87ºF for tilapia is considered optimum.

Varieties:
Channel catfish, white catfish, blue catfish, and several varieties can be found.
Origins:
Wels catfish is the only one native to Europe. They originated in South east Asia and Greece.
Don't get snakeheads or channel cats - cute when small, but guaranteeed to outgrow anything you have.

I have 20 albino tiger barbs with 4 albino corys, 2 albino channel catfish, and 1 albino rainbow shark. Well, even in this large number, they will still nip fins.
One common species of long-whiskered catfish, the Pictus Cat - Pimelodus pictus grows to 10" while the Channel Cat (a pink form is often seen) grows over 2 feet long.
---Tilapia with off-flavor (as in channel catfish) are hard or impossible to sell (except maybe as brood stock).

Comment : I started out with the 10 gallon kit from wally world and am considering the 55 gallon tank because my two blue channel cats are getting too big for the 29 gallon tank that I have now.
Our Flying Fox (approx. 12 cm) is now in quarantine after shredding our Channel Cat´s fins (approx. 15 cm) and our Pleco´s fins (approx. 25 cm). SHAME! SHAME! He is going back!
