ALESTIIDAE FAMILY
The Alestiidae or African Tetra family is composed of, among others, the genera Alestes, Arnoldichthys, Brycinus, Hemigrammopetersius, Hydrocynus and Phenacogrammus and are exclusively found in Africa.

The characin family includes many "tankbusters". From the shy Silver Dollar to the ferocious Piranha, they all have one thing in common; They're all nicely colored and great swimmers.
All characins are highly sensitive to water parameters and conditions; the water quality should be stable, and use of medications should be avoided unless absolutely essential.

Characin and Barbs breed in thickly planted tanks with no gravel, rocks or flower pots. The best plants are cabomba, hornwort, java moss. Plastic plants work well too. The plants generally fall to the bottom of the tank.

Characins, or Characiformes, are native to Africa and Central America. Most of them have teeth and prefer insects, but will hardly balk at other types of food.
Characins are most diverse in the Neotropics, where they are found in tropical lakes and rivers throughout most of South America, Central America, and central Africa.
The Characin Family. This fish family includes everything from the tiny neon tetra to the piranha - which is not a recommended pet! The beautiful tetras, however, are excellent for aquariums. They prefer the middle level of the tank.
The Blood Characins are some of the easier Tetras to breed. Condition the pair well and use a small breeding tank (3 to 5 gallons) with a dark substrate and containing many fine leafed plants such as Myriophyllum, Cabomba and some Java moss, ...

Somewhat related to Tetras, Hatchets (family Gasteropelecidae) and Pencils (genus Nannostomus) are Characins from South America. Many of them need soft and acid water and all of them are delicate.
Like the Characins, Alestiids range in size from 1.5cm (less than 1 inch) to 150cm (5 feet). There is also considerable diversity in the lifestyles of these fishes.
Pacus are the largest of all the Characin species. They should not be purchased unless you have a very very large aquarium. Although Piranha are perceived as "tough" carnivores, they are not that tough when it comes to ammonia and nitrite.
Avoid housing this fish with some of the more active characins and barbs.
The tanks with limpid colorless water, neutral or slightly acid, are inhabited by small Characins that are somewhat difficult for amateurs to keep.
