All characins are highly sensitive to water parameters and conditions; the water quality should be stable, and use of medications should be avoided unless absolutely essential.

Most characins are omnivorous, opportunistic feeders that take anything from fallen fruit to insect larvae and smaller fishes. Characins are egg-scatterers and are not live-bearers.

Order:Characins

Maximum size: 6 cm / 2.5 inches. A tank of at least 20 gallons is preferred because of their size. They will stay at the top to medium level in your aquarium. So the bigger surface area the better.

The Blood Characins are some of the easier Tetras to breed. Condition the pair well and use a small breeding tank (3 to 5 gallons) with a dark substrate and containing many fine leafed plants such as Myriophyllum, Cabomba and some Java moss, ...

As with most Characins (see Characidae), they are omnivores and prefer a varied diet, including live or frozen food, and vegetables. However, they will not swim to the bottom to eat so all food must float.

Small peaceful characins or other non aggressive community fish. Keep in shoals.

- plecos are omnivorous, consuming large quantities of algae, plant matter, and the occasional dead fish that sinks to the bottom - plecos are primarily scavengers and are too poorly designed to be hunters, but large plecos will eat small characins ...

Somewhat related to Tetras, Hatchets (family Gasteropelecidae) and Pencils (genus Nannostomus) are Characins from South America. Many of them need soft and acid water and all of them are delicate.

Ideal companions include other Corydoras Catfishes (they would probably perform even more mirthful antics if kept with pygmaeus), various small Characins such as Cardinals and Lemons (both of which share my Pandas' home), ...

Like the Characins, Alestiids range in size from 1.5cm (less than 1 inch) to 150cm (5 feet). There is also considerable diversity in the lifestyles of these fishes.

Avoid housing this fish with some of the more active characins and barbs.

The tanks with limpid colorless water, neutral or slightly acid, are inhabited by small Characins that are somewhat difficult for amateurs to keep.

Quarantine has been sort of a nightmare since all our tanks were already filled and - once back home - we were sitting there with many bags filled with Corydoras, Apistogrammas, every kind of loriicarid you can think of, characins etc.

Pacu are members of the Serrasalminae sub-family of Characins. The Characins is the group of fish, primarily from South America and Africa, that is best known as the Tetras.

There are more than a thousand species of Tetras and other Characins. Most do not tolerate new-tank conditions, but we probably left out a hundred or so more that do. We have listed the hardiest of the most commonly-available species here.

This fish is the KING of Characins...it is by far the largest. This is a big, powerful, and well protected Tetra!
Because of it's size and look as well as it's open habitats this fish is more of a gamefish than pet worthy.

Tetras are tropical freshwater fish belonging to the family Characidae (sometimes they are referred to as characins) that are found in South and Central America and Africa.

This is known as the 'adipose fin', and it can be a small singular structure (as in characins) or a more elaborate one (as in some catfishes).

In nature they swim in schools, often in combination with characins, and this should also be the case in an aquarium.

Breeding: No detailed breeding reports available, probably similar to other characins.
Sexual dimorphism: See pictures. The males display a deep copper red color, females are less colorful.
