Checker barbs natively live in a tropical climate and prefer water with a pH of 6.0 - 6.5, a water hardness of 10.0 dGH, and a temperature range of 68-75 °F (20-24 °C). Their omnivorous diet consists of small worms, crustaceans, insects, and plants.
Checker Barbs - Capoeta oligolepis and Spanner or T-Barbs - Barbodes lateristriga are large, peaceful barbs (Spanner Barbs up to 7" long). Unless you have a very large aquarium avoid Tinfoil Barbs - Barbodes schwanefeldi.
The Checker Barbs' spawning habit is egg scattering, so when I set up a 10 gallon tank I laid a spawning grid along the bottom to separate the eggs from the parents.

in thousands of fish farms in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Florida, barbs have been a long-standing favorite of the tropical fish hobbyist. The more popular ones are the Tiger Barb, Cherry Barb, Green Tiger Barb, Filament Barb, and Checker Barb.
They make audible clicking sounds, which I thought was only a clown loach trick, and peep over the top of rocks and wood. My tank is free from snails, all my plants are intact, and even my checker barbs seem to enjoy the candy-striped loaches ...
