Chelate

Aquarium Checkered BarbChemical Filtration

Chelated is referred to in metals. For example chelated iron.
This word means a chemical compound in the form of a heterocyclic ring, containing a metal ion attached by bonds to at least two nonmetal ions.

Chelate: Pincherlike; having two opposable claws.
Chelators: Synthetic organic acids that enable Iron and other trace elements to be absorbed easily by the plants.

Chelate - Refers to a chemical complex where iron or some other mineral is tightly bound to an organic compound. This facilitates the uptake of iron and other trace elements by aquarium plants.

Chelate Types
There are six types of chelates important to hydroponic growth but only two that need to be mentioned for aquarium plants both for production and in the aquarium.

Chelated calcium:
The efficacy of chelated calcium products available for reef aquaria is questionable.

1 tablespoon chelated trace mix
1 tablespoon MgSO4+7H2O
2 tablespoons K2SO4
1 tablespoon KNO3 (varies, depends on your nitrate) ...

I stopped dosing chelated iron several weeks ago and have observed the following: the hair algae in the display tank has neither increased nor decreased.

My experience over a 4 month period indicates that humic chelated iron is being released from the substrate but not at a level to create serious algae problems.

Chelated
Chelation bonds metal ions to an organic molecule, making the metal ion highly soluble. Bioavailability can be increased or decreased depending on the mineral-chelate complex formed.

The metal ions will not precipitate from the water column, making them available to the life forms we keep, which are able to use the chelated complex and "extract" the ion for their own use.

To address the rapid copper loss problem, some manufacturers "chelate" their copper salt, which essentially means that the copper ion is bound to a larger molecule for stability.

Some desired materials are likely to be lost to carbon, most especially the chelated metals such as iron from plant supplements, or copper if you are a user of such - the chelating agents are readily adsorbed by GAC.

These "slimy" conditioners usually neutralize chlorine and chelate small quantities of heavy metals such as copper and lead.

Some additives contain chelated iodine. My opinion about chelated products is that we know so little about chelators that I do not like using them.

There are several options here.
1) Mix them all together according to the recipe. Shake well. Keep in the refrigerator.
2) Mix everything except the chelated trace element mix.

If laterite or peat is used in the substrate and a very slow flow of water can be forced through the substrate, water-born nutrients will be chelated by the laterite or peat. This will provide a continuous source of nutrients in the substrate.

Contains chelated iron, and bio available forms of magnesium, manganese, sodium, calcium, zinc and cobalt. Formulated with a density greater than water so the microspheres sink to the aquarium floor where they can attach to the plant roots.

Metallic Ions present in tap water are chelated by ChlorXChange and made available for consumption by plants.

Many medications can be "denatured" by the UV light, so the sterilizer should be turned off when using medications, especially chelated copper treatments.

You will see we continued to test everything SG, pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Calcium, Phosphate and Non-Chelated Iron, every 3-4 days.

Leaf ZoneŽ Promotes the healthy growth of aquatic plants. Leaf Zone is formulated for rapid absorption through plant leaves. Contains chelated iron and potassium essential for lush green leaves. -Taken from the product's website ...

This time I treated the main tank with chelated copper, general remedy for external parasites. Very shortly after I put it in the water the Cory reacted and the white parasites came off it's body on a clear membrane that separated off Cory's body.

A good trick is to check the copper concentration in the tank shortly after the initial dosage and use this as a guide for the proper level to maintain. This will usually be about .15 ppm (higher for heavily chelated copper compounds like ...
