Distribution: The Cherry Barb was described by Deraniyagala in 1929. From Asia, they are found in shaded streams and rivers in Kelani to Nilwala basins, Sri Lanka.

The cherry barb is an elongated fish with a rather compressed body. It is fawn-colored on top with a greenish sheen. Its sides and belly are a gleaming silver, often reddish.

These small brightly coloured fish are shyer than tiger barbs. They are easy to care for given the right water conditions so are suitable for beginners.

PD: Has one pair of barbels on the upper jaw near the corners of the mouth. The back is brownish red in color with a green iridescence. Fins are red in color.

Cherry Barbs are an easy fish to care for. They do not need special attention, and are rather hardy. They should be kept in water with a temperature range form 76 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cherry Barbs or Capoeta Titteya fish originate in Ceylon, which the fish grow around 2 inches in size. The fish compose a figure of yellow-brown, or red-brown. The fish are distinguished by their dark top to bottom black stripes.

Cherry Barbs
Cherry barbs are a shy fish, so adequate hiding spaces are necessary. Cherry barbs are a peaceful (when in schools) and hardy tropical fish that are a good addition to a tropical aquarium.

This crew may include animals to do cleaning chores: small or dwarf plecos and/or Otocinclus, Siamese Algae Eaters (SAEs), American (or Florida) Flag Fish (FFF), Cherry Barbs, mollies, ...

The one other exception is the Cherry Barb, which is not only one of the smallest Barbs, but in our experience, seems to be the most delicate of the commonly available species.

Apart from such "mass produced" species, they are also getting into Pterophyllum scalare, Colisa lalia, Geophagus brasiliensis, Corydoras aeneus, Corydoras panda, Puntius titteya (the cherry barb), Helostoma temminckii, ...

For a tank of small community fish, White Clouds or Zebra Danios are good cycling fish; Cherry Barbs or Tiger Barbs are good for a slightly more aggressive tank; or Pseudotropheus zebra is a good choice for an African Cichlid tank.

I have a 10 gallon tank with 3 cherry barb fish. We are having a terrible time with algae growth. We will do a complete water change that includes new rocks, filters, and decorations. The tank will be troughly scrubbed.

Cyprinids (White Cloud Mountain Minnow, Zebra Danios, Rasboras, and Cherry Barbs) These little guys are hardy. You will find tons of color and pattern variations. You will also enjoy watching their schooling behavior.

Capoeta titteya, the Cherry Barb, is a terrific little barb - up to 2" long and with a wonderful orange-red color.

The Cherry Barb seems to be the most delicate of the commonly available species.
Long-finned hybrids and short-finned varieties of some Barb species do not survive a new "unconditioned" tank
Tiger Barbs may nip at the fins of other fishes.

Don't give up on the Barbs too fast though, as many are well suited as first fish, especially for those with moderate sized tanks. Capoeta titteya, the Cherry Barb, is a terrific little barb - up to 2" long and with a wonderful orange-red color.
