The Chinese Algae Eater comes from Asia and has a slender body and is golden to brown in color. A darker stripe runs horizontally and is either solid or broken into spots.

The Chinese Algae Eater is a common aquarium fish. Juveniles are extremely useful, as they clean the surfaces in the tank of algae - but adults are not well suited to community tanks.

Chinese Algae Eaters - Gyrinocheilus aymonieri are often introduced into the aquarium to do what their common (sales) name implies - eat algae. They are usually seen at a small size and many die within a short time of purchase.

The only fish I lost was my first (and last) Chinese Algae Eater. The fish suctioned itself to the bag and was thrown, unseen, into the trash in an unheated garage. By the time I found it missing, it was frozen stiff.

Do not confuse this fish with the Chinese Algae Eater, which is very aggressive and does not eat algae. The siamese algae eater, Crossocheilus siamensis, is a very good algae consumer and is known to eat black brush (red) algae.

Discus My 38 Gallon Aquarium, 3 Discus, 6 Tiger Barbs, 3 Chinese Algae Eaters, one Gold Nugget Pleco, and a Gold Chinese Algae Eater. I'm using a Marineland C-Series Multi Stage Canister Filter C-220, the best fiter out there.

I bought small 5 tiger barbs and 5 tinfoil barbs, and a Chinese algae eater to replace the pl*co. The first tiger barb was picked off the same night, and another had most of it's tailfin chewed off, but it lived and grew the fin back.

Dense cover and vegetation is preferred with the Chinese Algae eater.
These fish do like current (though its generally not recommended in community aquariums).

When first planting, aim to cover 70% of the aquarium, and add a couple of algae eating fish (Chinese algae eaters) for the first month to give the plants time to establish their root systems and use up the nutrients in the water, ...

You might not notice problems immediately because aggressive or predatory behavior may occur at night. For example, your Chinese algae eater becomes both large and aggressive as it grows and could eventually spell serious trouble for your goldfish.

b. The ultimate destroyer is a fish called the Siamese Algae Eater (Crossocheilus siamensis). This is the only critter known to eat this algae. Similar looking fish, like the Chinese Algae Eater or Flying Fox won't touch it.
