Cichlids (pronounced 'sick-lids') are fishes from the family Cichlidae in the order Perciformes. The family Cichlidae, a major family of perciform fish, is both large and diverse.

- Cichlids are aggressive. Some cichlids are much more aggressive than others, but almost all cichlids are aggressive and a larger aquarium makes it easier for weaker fish to avoid this hostility.

A few people have e-mailed the Cichlid Page asking how I took the pictures of the fish. Since I know very little about photography and lost the one book I had for reference, I don't know if I should be giving anyone advice, but here it goes.
They breed like other large Cichlids, such as A portalegrensis, but are more temperamental as to fighting and also as to eating their young. Easily spawned, and may turn out very large families or none at all.

Some cichlids protect their babies well enough to just be left in a community setup, although this can stress the other fish in the tank.
Your cichlids may resume their excavations once they get settled in and establish territories. Several species of cichlids sift sand, and they will keep a sandbed aerated.

Care: Convict cichlids are aggressiv fish, and as such do not belong in a community tank. They are best kept in pairs in species tanks, or together with other large robust fish.
Africans Refers to freshwater cichlids from Africa. These fish come from the very hard, slightly salty water of the rift lakes. air pump A pump which supplies air for lift tubes, skimmers, bubblers, etc.
In November 2006 I connected what had been my acrylic 40 gallon cichlid aquarium in-line to use as an ornamental Refugium & Softie tank. The refugium is made up of live rock, soft corals, and macro-algae.
African Cichlids and marine species like it in the relatively high alkaline ranges, between 7.8 (Africans) to 8.4 (marine fish and corals). Most species have specific comfort bands that should be used when breeding is important.
