The cichlidae are a large family of fishes, comprising more than a thousand species. Most of those popular in the hobby are found in Central and South America, and Africa. There is great variation in body shape and size across the family.

Cichlids comprise the largest single family of fish kept in aquaria. The family Cichlidae is one of some 156 families in the order Perciformes. The name Perciformes is derived from the Greek perke [perch] and the Latin forma [shape].
Cichlids have well-developed lips and only one nostril on each side of the head. The head, eyes, and scaled are large, and the lateral line is divided in the middle. The anterior rays of the dorsal and anal fins are spiny.

They breed like other large Cichlids, such as A portalegrensis, but are more temperamental as to fighting and also as to eating their young. Easily spawned, and may turn out very large families or none at all.

The cichlid family is a very large and diverse group of tropical fish. African cichlids from Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Victoria are excellent cichlid fish for starting a new aquarium.

Some cichlids protect their babies well enough to just be left in a community setup, although this can stress the other fish in the tank.

Rusty Cichlids usually do well in brighter full spectrum lighting. Enclosure temperatures are usually kept between 73 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 28 degrees Celsius). Water should have a pH level between 7.6 and 8.6.
These Cichlids use a typical trick when breeding. They clean off a flat rock and then lay their eggs on it. If breeding occurs you will likely be caught off guard by the number of eggs. It is not odd for these fish to have up to 2000 eggs.

Other Cichlids - Africans from Lake Tanganyika or Americans, such as species of the Apistogramma genus - lay their eggs in a cavity or small cave, sometimes even on the ceiling, if this is the only suitable place.
Though cichlids are typically aggressive and territorial, Oscars are usually only aggressive if they are feeling crowded in an aquarium that is too small, or if they are breeding.

Care: Convict cichlids are aggressiv fish, and as such do not belong in a community tank. They are best kept in pairs in species tanks, or together with other large robust fish.

A common problem in African Cichlids and other pond raised fish is intestinal parasites. An obvious symptom of this problem is pinched bellies. Often the fish lose their appetite, but others may continue to eat and not put on any weight.
