Bacterial Blossom - Often cloudy water doesn't appear the instant an aquarium is set up. Instead it appears days, weeks, or even months later. In these cases the cause is usually due to bacterial bloom.

I just set up a 55 Gallon tank recently. Started the filtration, added the substrate and salt water. However it is still pretty cloudy. Is there anything I can do to change that?

Tip: If you have cloudy water from overfeeding your fish, daphnia will clear it up! (But make sure you have small fish that eats daphnia because big fish ignores them).

Ironically, it is also the most common cause of cloudy water. This bacteria problem also comes in a couple of forms. The first really only occurs in a new tank.

Algae outbreaks (attached, or free-floating in the form of "green water&"), cloudy water (gray or smoky appearance from free-floating or swimming bacteria), fungus on food particles at the surface of the substrate, etc.

Otherwise you will end up with cloudy water that your filter will struggle to clear Put some it into a bucket and mix in the laterite for the plants. You need enough to put a bed of about one to one and a half inches in the bottom of the tank.

Overfeeding this food caused cloudy water, so I had to be careful, but all my apistos and other fish just loved it. It was cheap, too, about $50/bag. Unfortunately, it only comes in 50 lb. bags and my source is out of frog keeping research.

Cloudy water of whatever color is likely to be self-limited and to clear without intervention.

If it is already cloudy then change it, as cloudy water will threaten your betta's health. Normally, small bowls or containers should have water changes at least twice a week. Larger tanks can be changed once a week.

Any uneaten food should probably be removed (depending on what your feeding.) Other common reasons for cloudy water are: Changing too much water too often, using poor quality water when replacing, overcrowding the aquarium, ...

Cloudy water is also a familiar situation that further indicates need for additional water change. Virtually every single day I am changing some percentage of larval tank water.

Old terrarium set-up (the VERY FIRST set-up. Note cloudy water),
New terrarium set-up (added better, external, filter. Still NO PLANTS),
Filter (filter media are clearly in sight), ...

Jeez, you wake up to find your aquarium cloudy and your fish stricken. Don't panic, it's the cloudy water, just do water changes and they'll be fine.

Too many fish in a tank leads to stress, shortened lives, additional maintenance, algae growth, and cloudy water.

Carbon is good for removing a large number of toxins and other unwanted substances from aquarium water. It's useful for clearing or "cleaning" cloudy water.

it is especially useful for clearing and "polishing" cloudy water. The only real problem with carbon is that is can release phosphate into the water, which stimulates algae growth. (IE. Dark Tank Syndrome) ...

Other problems can occur such as the substrate becoming clogged with solid waste, leading to cloudy water and lower oxygen levels.

Within a few days, the presence of infusoria can be determined by the cloudy water. Feed the infusoria using an eyedropper. Rotifer eggs can often be purchased at pet shops.

Attach to Quick Filters for additional chemical and/or mechanical filtration (ideal for clearing cloudy water in combination with PClear). Increase oxygen level (position output to move water surface).
