Clown Plecos can live up to about 18 years.

Clown Pleco's do not eat algae in abundance, and do not generally feed on live plants.

The Clown Plecos of the genus Peckoltia have alternating transverse bands of darker and lighter brown, tan, or yellow and generally stay under 4" long.
a breeding pair of rainbows and a clown pleco. So I'd say play around with the plants I mentioned, but don't expect a garden showpiece. This is what most people do, and the plants are basically disposable...
If you can't find SAE's, Bushy Nosed Cats (Ancistrus sp.) are a reasonable alternative, as are some of the Clown Plecos.
Clown Plecostomus (Peckoltia arenaria). Easy to care for fish that eats algae. There hasn't been much success (any?) with breeding Clown Plecos in aquariums.
Goldfish (Carassius auratus).
I have a Figure 8 puffer living in a tank with a two angels, six penguin tetras, a sailfin pleco, a clown pleco, three tiger barbs and a siamese fighting fish. Quite a mix, I know, but there's harmony in there.

Two common types that are useful are the "bristle-nose plecostomus" and the "clown plecostomus" or Pekoltia. Both stay under 4″ long and don't seem to cause too much plant damage.
The use of activated carbon is also effective at removing this discoloration. An excellent method of keeping driftwood clean is to keep ancistrus or plecostomus (clown plecostomus) species which scrape and ingest it as part of their diet.
Some example of algae eating fish are Bristle Noses and Clown Plecostomus'. This will be a big help to you in keeping the algae under control. Another type of freshwater fish are the Oscars.
