Coagulant A chemical compound used in water clarifiers. It causes fine particles to stick together to be more easily removed by the filter. Communities Different species of fish kept in the same aquarium.
The venom found in this species of seastar contains a variety of chemicals including plancinin, an anticoagulant, and plancitoxin, the major lethal ingredient found in the venom (Ota et al, 2006).
Steps include the addition of chemical coagulants or pH-adjustment chemicals that react to form floc. The floc settles by gravity into settling tanks or is removed as the water percolates through a gravity filter.
The addition of a coagulant or flocculent assists in the collection of this dying matter by causing the single-celled plant forms to clump together. They can then be netted with a fine skimmer net, vacuumed or filtered.
