Colored lighting is lighting that is different colors such as white, red, blue, and green. It usually used to simulate moon lighting, illuminate the tank at night to observe nocturnal creatures, and for decorative purposes.

The color and pattern of this fish is unique. The body will typically be dark blue, dark purple, or black with systematic white dots forming vertical stripes along the body and fins.

The color of the Jack Dempsey changes greatly depending upon age, mood, and stress levels. A healthy young fish should be a brownish-tan with a black spot on each side of its body, and one on each side of the base of the tail.

The colorful reef fishes so typical of a salt water aquarium are just a part of the reef fish community. At night, a transition occurs between the colorful daytime inhabitants, and the dark, red colored night time fishes.

The color of the fish should be dense; where a pattern is formed there should be no blurring of adjacent colors.

Darker or patchy coloration is a good indicator of stress. Before you buy a fish, try to know what it should look like under normal conditions. Get a good fish book.
