Columnaris
Columnaris
By Fruitylicious
I wanted to do an article on one of the other common fish diseases. I hope this will help us to be more well informed and able to see the early signs of this disease.

Columnaris can be external or internal and may follow a chronic or acute course. Lesions in chronic cases progress slowly, taking many days before culminating in fish death.

Flexibacter columnaris
Mouth fungus
Bacterial mouth rot
Cotton wool disease ...

Columnaris - A bacterial infection caused by Flavobacterium columnare. Fish with Columnaris usually have brown-to-yellowish-brown lesions or sores on their gills, mouth skin, and/or fins.

Columnaris is partly caused by bad water quality, allowing uneaten food to remain in the tank causing this bacteria to multiply, as well as the fish having an inadequate diet or stressed from being introduced to a new tank.

Disease: Columnaris
Symptoms: Fins fray and shred. Cloudy white mold on scales, similar to fungus but treatment won't work. Gills may turn brown. Often appears as white worms on the aquarium walls before fish show signs of illness.

False Fungus ( Columnaris Disease/Mouth Fungus/Mouth Rot)
While this disease look like a fungus attack, it is actually a bacteria infection. As with most common diseases, false fungus is caused by stress in the living environment of the fish.

Mouth Fungus (Columnaris)
Although Columnaris resembles fungus it is in fact a Bacterium. It is usually found just around the mouth area, rarely spreading.

(Also known as: Columnaris, Cotton-Wool, Cotton-Mouth, Flexibacter, Mouth Fungus) ...

If yes: fish has Columnaris, or body fungus. Consult the Treatment and Methodology section for more information.

Mouth Fungus/Saddle Back Disease Causative Agent: _Flexibacter columnaris_ is a common bacteria found on the slime coating of healthy and sick fish. Appearance: Although commonly called mouth fungus this infection is really a bacterial infection.

A combination of Kaynamycin and Furanace usually works, especially for Columnaris. Again, treat in a separate tank and aerate heavily.
Injuries ...

A bacteria, Flexobacter (Chondrococcus) Columnaris.
Open sores on Gouramis or other anabantids.
Bacterial Infection (Furunculosis) ...

White Spot Disease (Ich)
Bacterial Fin Rot (Columnaris)
White Cotton Disease (True Fungus)
Viral Cauliflower Disease (Lymphocystus) ...

Those that are red on the edges and white in the center are generally Columnaris. Both are gram negative bacteria. The best treatment for this is any sulfa antibiotic with trimetheprim.

This would include infections such as those caused by Vibrio anguillarum, Flexibacter columnaris, Trichodina spp. and fungal infections such as Saprolegnia spp.

It is impossible for the home aquarist to determine for certain the difference between NTD and false NTD on the basis of visible symptoms alone, without laboratory backup. This disease has also been confused with Columnaris (mouth rot, mouth fungus, ...
