Catfish are not scavengers, to be put in an aquarium to clean up messes. You may have heard that if you keep Catfish and/or a Plecostomus or two, you'll hardly ever need to clean your tank.

The common Plecostomus is very popular and can be found in any pet store. Many people believe this fish to be the best algae eater out there. They would be wrong. It's large and innapropriate for many home aquariums.

The common pleco displays sexual differences in males by small barbels that grow around the mouth when they are mature, females have larger stomachs. As many of you have found, they can grow quite large, leading to good resale value.

Common Plecos are NOT good tankmates for Goldfish as Plecos are not only tropical fish but have a difficult time getting enough to eat and. given they are nocturnal, they may also latch onto Goldfish while they are sleeping.

These beautiful fish inhabit the aquarium with a 16" silver arowana, as well as two common plecos, and two raphael catfishes, and more importantly, my medium silver gourami (G-Fish).

Many people rush out to the local fish store to buy a common pleco when they see they have an algae problem. In general, a common pleco is not a good solution to getting rid of algae.

Zebra Plecos are very shy fish and rarely come out during the day time to feed unlike the common pleco which rarely hide and feeds all day.

As mentioned below in the Bad First Fish section, common Plecos (Hypostomus species) are often sold to beginners as algae cleaners. Unfortunately, these fish get too large for the relatively small tanks of most beginners.

Red spots, gold spots, and common plecos are some of the most popular in the hobby. They are often called sailfin plecos due to their very large dorsal fins.

Ideally, you should research and decide on the fish and any other animals you want to keep before you even buy a tank. Many freshwater hobbyists think the common pleco is a cool fish to have and indeed it is.

Several examples include, but are not limited to, the common plecostomus, the silver arowana, the red-bellied pacu, and tinfoil barbs. Realize that the myth 'the fish will grow to the size of the tank' is just that, a myth.

She has a single mid-sized discus (3" or so), 1 blue gourami, 1 gold gourami, and 1 common pleco in there at the moment. The tank substrate is pea sized river gravel with a few plastic plants and decorations.

Often sold as a "Common Plecostomus" in the United States. In stagnant water conditions with little dissolved oxygen, the Snow King Plec, like other Plecos, can intake atmospheric oxygen, and store it in its intestine.

Aquarium stores don't carry them as often as the common plecos, but they're worth the wait, IMO. Zebra plecos are a variety of Peckoltia. They stay small, and grow fairly slowly.
