Contraction The shedding of the leaves at the onset of the dormant period.
Convexity Having the property of curving outward, like the outside of a ball.

Barbonymus is a contraction [Barb] of the earlier Barbus, plus anonymous [Latin, from the Greek anonumos] meaning anonym ("without name"). The species name (assigned by Bleeker) honours the original collector, H.W. Schwanefeld.

(thermal contraction is neat.) The outside won't let it shrink (as it is already cool and can't deform). Therefore, the outside is in compression, and the inside is in tension.

The fact that the aqueous extracts of stony corals causes polyp contraction, bleaching and tissue loss in other stony corals within 24 hours, ...

Temperature affects gaseous activity, molecular oscillation, and the expansion and contraction in the tissues of fish, and sudden hikes and lows of temperature over a few seconds can cause swim bladders to either expand with rapidity, ...

These contractions form S-shaped curves that move down the body of the fish. As each curve reaches the back fin, backward force is created. This backward force, in conjunction with the fins, moves the fish forward.

Once this starts it is very difficult to cure, so it is better to keep the conditions optimal to avoid contraction of the disease. If there ever was a fish that really cries out for a quarantine tank, the glass cat is that fish.

Worms can shorten and change shape using muscle cells whose contractions are controlled by a primitive nervous system. Asexual reproduction allows a new head and tail ends to form by a process of tissue regeneration.

Terminal Anchor: In hydraulically burrowing organisms: any device used to anchor the leading portion of the burrower, permitting muscular contraction to drag the rest of the body into the sediment.
