Convicts are fairly popular and easy to breed. They are found in Guatemala at Lake Atitlan and Lake Amatillan. These fish are aggressive and should be kept in a mono-species tank. They consume live and artificial foods.

I also have a Yelloweye surgeonfish ( Ctenochaetus strigosus ) and a pair of Convict surgionfish ( Acanthurus triostegus ). The odd couple of the tank are a pair of Siganus rabbitfish, one S. unimaculatus the other S. doliatus that are inseparable.

However, a colony of prolific cichlids, such as convicts, can practically be used as a source of feeder fry. For fish like piranhas, a small piece of raw chicken or a strip of fish fillet will work just as well as a live fish.

This feature in addition to their hardy nature also means they can withstand the attentions of some of the more boisterous medium sized Central American Cichlids (Firemouths, Convicts etc.).

The zebra originally had stripes similar to the unrelated Convict Cichlid and the dark banding is faintly apparent on some specimens . There is much confusion surrounding the Cobalt Blue Zebra.

There are also so called 'jelly-bean' parrots for sale, which may be a hybrid with convict cichlids.
