The Convict Cichlid is well-known and well-liked within the hobby. Many people have owned them and enjoy them. They are an average colored fish with a bluish-gray base tone and solid black vertical stripes along their bodies.

Convicts are fairly popular and easy to breed. They are found in Guatemala at Lake Atitlan and Lake Amatillan. These fish are aggressive and should be kept in a mono-species tank.

Care: Convict cichlids are aggressiv fish, and as such do not belong in a community tank. They are best kept in pairs in species tanks, or together with other large robust fish.

Now Taiwan's Council of Agriculture revealed that it has successfully bred transgenic Convict cichlids (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) and Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare). These two new breeds of glowing fish are expected to hit the market in 2012.
