Corydoras are native to slow-moving and almost still (but seldom stagnant) streams and small rivers of South America where the water is shallow and very clear.

Also known as Sands' Cory Cat, Corydoras davidsandsi is active, yet peaceful, especially when kept in small schools.

In these fish the posterior intestine is modified to function as an air breathing organ by being air-filled, thin-walled and highly vascularized.

Corydoras ambiacus is often misidentified at C. agassizi because they are both spotted and occur in some of the same water ways.

Corydoras barbatus started to show up in the Milwaukee area about eight years ago and since I had never had them before, I needed them. They were not cheap but fairly reasonable. I took home a half dozen of these beauties.

Corydoras adolfoi are attractive looking fish, but be aware: they need clean, pristine water. I learned this when I added one to a small tank I'd setup, but because the aquarium water had not matured enough he didn't survive very long.

My Corydoras habrosus were sold to me as a pygmy corydoras, but when I actually researched them further I found that they were in fact Corydoras habrosus.

The corydoras genus comes from the Callichthyidae family and contains over 150 specific species with still more being discovered. All corydoras come from South America. They spread from Columbia in the north to Argentina in the south.

The Cory Catfish, also known as the "Spotted Cory" "Punctatus Cory" and "Corydoras", is an excellent fish and highly recommended for any non-aggressive community tank.

Corydoras aeneus (Gill 1858)
The next step was to add some Corydoras aeneus in the tank - see photo below. I initially bought five of them while I am waiting for an additional 12 to create a nice school.

Corydoras sterbai, which is referred to as Sterba's Cory, Sterbai Cory, or Sterba's Corydoras, is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling member of the armoured catfish group.

Corydoras narcissus Nijssen & Isbrucker, 1980 (catfish) Named "narcissus" because the discoverers insisted that the describer name the fish after them.

The Julii Corydoras is an attractive little catfish. It's body is silver or light gray with tiny black dots all over. There will be a single (thin) lateral line down the body.

In the wild, most Corydoras swim in schools of several dozen or more, and similar conditions should be duplicated in the home aquarium.

In another post on Corydoras, I said that they should be treated as honoured guests, and not expected to rummage around constantly for other fishes' leftovers if they are to be brought to peak condition.

Green Catfish - Corydoras aeneus - These classic scavengers are also very tolerant of varying water conditions and temperatures. Also available in albino form.

A Corydoras catfish can be kept with the parents to eat any leftover food particles.

If kept in a community aquarium, the best tank mates are other species of Nannostomus, small peaceful characins and corydoras. Aquaria with strong water current, large tank mates, or swift-moving species are contraindicated.

Cory Cats are members of the family Callichthyidae, a family of armored catfish from South America. Corys are small (generally 2 1/2" long or less), schooling fish that are always searching the bottom of the tank for food.

Examples of tropical bottom feeding fish include Corydoras catfish, algae eating fish such as Plecostamus, Loaches, Crustaceans, Chinese Algae Eaters, Octocinclus and sharks.

Some, such as the endearing Corydoras catfish, seem to have a “live-and-let-live' outlook on life, getting along just fine with most other peaceful tankmates, while others seem to be perpetually scrapping for a fight.

There are at least 140 species of catfish in the genus Corydoras. Some of these are quite delicate and die quickly even in the hands of experts. The fragile ones, however, are rarely seen in pet stores and are high priced when they can be found.

Aquariums containing bottom feeders (botias, corydoras, etc.) should be fed regularly with bottom feeding tablets.

To keep uneaten food to a minimum, you may add a few hardy Corydoras (green, albino or peppered).
If you are unable to identify cheap, hardy fish, then you may use the selling price as a guide.
